During the school year, many students present with symptoms of viral illness. Viral childhood illness cannot be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms of viral illness can include fever, lethargy, cough, congestion, runny nose, sore throat, malaise, decreased appetite or rash. If your child develops symptoms of viral illness, keep them home. Make sure they are drinking fluids and eating (even if it's smaller meals or snacks). Allow them to rest. Tea with honey is great for cough and sore throats. Contact your doctor if your child becomes lethargic, won't eat or drink, develops worsening symptoms or doesn't appear to be getting better after several days. Always trust your gut if your child doesn't seem right and contact your pediatrician.
